First In Internet Explorer be sure that in Security the security setting is set to medium and not High.

Then Download JAVA from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Also make sure your secuirty options allow you to run java applets from Internet Options - Advanced

Do these steps and tell me the results

this did not help. another thing i noticed is that when stuff is trying to load on my screen there is a lot of clicking noise. I logged on as 'manager' and deleted the index.dat file in c:\documents and settings\myusername\local settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5. Restarted and logged on so the index.dat file would be re-created. This did not help either.

<smile> don't give up

Insert your XP CD in your CD-ROM
(if installation wizard starts just click Exit)

Go to Start/Run and type sfc /scannow

if some of your system files (like your Internet Explorer) are corrupted or missing then they'll be fixed with this scan.
When scan finishes restart your PC and see if this solved the problem.

If sfc/scannow didn't help, then do the following:

- if you have Zone Alarm or a fire wall, then shut it down and see if this solved the problem

- Disable the built in firewall provided by SP2 and see if it solved the problem

- Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
(Click File/ Export and type a name and click Save. This will back up your registry in case you made a mistake)

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN

In the FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN subkey, follow these steps:
Click Iexplore.exe.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
Click Explore.exe.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
click Exit on the File menu.
Restart Windows and see if this solved the problem

I have Symantec Client Firewall ...... I disabled it and BINGO, no more problems. I don't want my firewall disabled, what do I need to do now?

That's good news Very Happy
It seems that SP2 still have problems with some programs.
Try to disable the buit in Windows Firewall
Right-click My Network Places, Properties, right-click your connection, properties, Advanced, Settings, and check OFF for the firewall.
If this didn't solve the problem, you'll need to wait till Microsoft release an update that might solve this problem.
(by the way, the built in Sp2 Firewall is not bad)

Another solution is to uninstall SP2 and live with SP1

Evil or Very Mad darn microsoft - they had better get that fixed before election day! LOL I disabled my symantec firewall and got hit by 2 trojans, bischk and inetkwschk. This can't be good. It seems I have to update and clean my computer after every use. This can't be good either. I have 2 system restore files infected and started a new thread to get help with that. I really want to thank Cyanure and don77 for helping me out the past few weeks. It's been very hard for me to keep up with school and everything else, but I am thankful that you people are here to help and teach me. Thanks again to both of you. Very Happy
