Please Help Newbee

Reply Sat 21 Aug, 2004 08:48 pm
Hi everyone, I've been getting this error for about 2 months and have tried just about everything a newbee like me is capable of. I hope someone here can help: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience." Every time I click on 'send report' or 'close' IE closes. I turned off the error reporting to Microsoft. I looked to see what the ModName is, but it says 'unknown'. I have Windows XP Svspk 2, symantec up and running with a firewall and do live updates daily. I also have Spybot and Ad-aware, both of which have helped me keep my PC pretty clean. Is there any help for me? Question

the best thing to do is to repair IE
Insert your XP Cd in the CD-ROM drive (If the XP installation is launched just click Exit)
Click Start/Run and in Run type sfc /scannow and press OK
When the scan finishes, restart your computer.
If any system file is corrupted which IE is part, it will be replaced by a fresh copy from the XP CD.

thanks for the reply. I followed your tip and it seemed to work until I shut down my computer and started it back up a few hours later. The message is still appearing. Do you have any other things I could try? I've looked on the MS website but all that is too technical for me. Thanks.

Hi sunmaiden

How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore
Next Run an online scan bitdefender

Next
Could you download HiJackThis from Here or Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.
Most things are harmless and needed so don't make any changes.
post a log here please.

Hi again sunmaiden.
Lets do a few things here
First go Here Download and run CWShredder, Check for updates and click the "Fix" button,
Also from the site above download Spybot S&D1.3. Don't run it yet.
Download Ad-aware from here Check for updates,
Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Press "Scan Now"
- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:
Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"
Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK."

Now run Spybot, again check for updates, scan your system and fix anything it finds in red.

Next go to Add/Remove programs and remove Wild Tangents, Don't worry if you can't find it.

Reboot your computer

Now Please restart HJT put a check next to the following if they still exist, close all open windows and click fix checked.

It will be removed when you make the fix's I posted above,
while your in safe mode search for and delete this files as well,

Cool I can't believe how much I'm learning from you Don77. You're really a savy dude, I like that. I have Ad-aware, but I didn't purchase it so it won't let me check for updates Crying or Very sad . Anyway I flew through your "things-to-do" list when I got home from my class. Here's the HJT log. I hope it looks better this time.

Looks much better sunmaiden,
Just have HJT fix these same way as above,

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Searchfst Class - {000277A3-7D84-406a-9799-D12A81594693} - C:\WINDOWS\srchfst.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inetmgr] C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~2\inetmgr.exe

Into safe mode again same way as above search for and delete

C:\WINDOWS\srchfst.dll
C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~2\inetmgr.exe

When you first start Ad-aware, Above the Start button Click on
Check for updates now
Click connect, Click OK after it shows the newest updates, Click Finish, Then click Start to run a scan with the updates.

Post back after you have finished the above.

Very Happy I sent you an email to your ya-hoo, did you get it? I'm having problems with several screen icons loading. AND thanks very much for helping me with that pesky problem. I just heard today about another email virus called foto - so I set my symantec to do automatic updates daily.

Click Start/Run and type msconfig
Click Startup tab and check the programs you want to load a startup. Any program you check will have an icon in the lower right toolbar.

I guess I didn't explain my problem very well. By icons I meant like for instance the emoticons at the left of this post window are not there, each smiley face is just an empty box. This is what a lot of things look like on web pages, just a blank box with a small mark in the corner. It's like not all the graphic are not loading with the web page. Any ideas?

Is this happening just here or on every web page visited?
Did you you try to refresh the page?
It's not something in your computer, but mostly a connection problem or connection speed.
