Preping to install vinyl tiles

I will installing vinyl for the first time in my life. I bought a book that tells me most of what I need to know and I checked some websites on the subject.

However, I have not been able to determine how I prep the existing underlayment. I will be removing the existing vinyl covering and, presumably, there will be old glue stuck to the underlayment.

Do I need to remove the old underlayment and replace it with new underlayment?

If I can keep the old underlayment, how do I make it smooth for the new vinyl tiles?

Can the old glue be removed? If so, how?

I helped a friend put new flooring down in the kitchen--with new plywood over the old floor.
