Hello,
I am relatively new to the community, and am hoping that someone can help identify the painter of this piece. The bottom right corner of the painting is signed, "R. De M." In addition, the back of the canvas reads, "R. De Maria New York March, 1954". The canvas measures 22" wide by 28" tall. I believe the subject in the painting is New York Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, but am not 100% sure. Also, believe there was a New York artist named Walter De Maria, and not sure if this painter may have been a relative, or if it's just a coincidence.
Hoping someone is able to provide some information about the painter, the person in the painting, and/or the approximate value of something like this.
Thank you for the help
@Fruitjar1,
Well I remember Walter de Maria but no idea re his relatives.
I was raised on Bishop Sheen tv back then so I might recognize him if you can post a photo, via photobucket or imgur or other photo adding website.
@ossobuco,
Sorry, I missed that you posted a photo. I don't take that fellow as Bishop Sheen..
The painting or representation is familiar, though. Not of a recent person.
I'll guess it's a recent takeoff of an old italian painting, or of a part of one.
@ossobuco,

Rest in Peace, man.
I knew some about him, but not about all that wiki notes.
Hmm... Yeah, perhaps it isn't Sheen at all... Does anyone know what religion and/or time that garment outfit style is associated with?
@Fruitjar1,
Northern italian. I'm not in the mood for searching right now, though I can guess. You can do it.
You might even be able to do it via google images. I've not tried that, but I gather they have some kind of search process re photos of paintings.
