Correct wire Gauge?

Reply Thu 31 Mar, 2016 07:31 am
Objective: Running approximately 150 feet of wire from a panel to a shed in the back yard.

Issues:

1. Currently the wire is already run, but it is 14/2 wire. I think this is far too small for the load at the shed.
2. When using this calculator http://www.paigewire.com/pumpWireCalc.aspx
it says I need 6 gauge wire! However this is a site for pumps and heavy loads. I'll only be running 4 standard outlets (not at the same time) and 2-4ft. florescent lights. All 110v tools such as a small table saw, router. Etc. All 1 at a time.

Does anyone know a correct way to calculate the power load maximum so I can pick up the correct size wire? Also, if I get 6 gauge wire could that be too much wire if I really only need 10?

@jessejamesthebarber,
If I were you, I would find the amperage level of the largest tool you will be running-I imagine that would be the table saw. I did the calculation using 10 amperes and arrived at a wire size of 10 gauge copper wire.

Does your table saw or other heavy equipment have an amperage rating? I don't see how the fluorescent lights will be much of a factor, they can be ignored.

@Blickers,
PS: Going by resistance per foot, running 10 gauge copper wire 150 feet is the equivalent of running 14 gauge wire 60 feet.

Running 8 gauge copper wire 150 feet is the equivalent of running 14 gauge wire 37 feet.

Running 8 gauge copper wire 150 feet is the equivalent of running 14 gauge copper wire 23 feet.
