Perhaps that was it. I can't find the link now, but The Girl looked for play dates for Ex Machina today, and the reviews from 2015 were rather ho-hum.

Cool beans . . . i'd like to see big successful for a film made for so little money.
This is a movie that can easily be enjoyed at home. The effects are good, but the real strengths of the movie are the story and the characters.
I wouldn't wait to see this on the big screen. Rent it on Amazon or Netflix.
It has been more than a year since i last saw a movie in a theater. I want the entire motion picture experience--a disgustingly large tub of nasty popcorn, one of those big boxes of candy you can only get at the theater, sitting in a dark room with a hundred strangers.
