Rabbit and Wolf

The official thread for the continuing saga, with another chapter that promises adventure! Apologies for the reposts.

RABBIT AND WOLF

Rabbit popped up from her hutch
and sniffed the air.
No danger there, drifting in the breeze.
Hoppity-hop it was into the clover
to gather food for the heart
and hay for the home.
Wolf watched Rabbit intently
from his hideout in the woods,
drinking in the dance
of Rabbit's routine.

Rabbit had gathered
too much to hold.
Wolf popped out and said
"Hello, if I may be so bold,
you look like you need a hand."
Rabbit shrieked and dropped her load.
"You're a wolf, you're going to eat me!"

Wolf sat, dignified.
"A Canis Lupus would never be so rude."
Rabbit cocked her head to one side,
and wrinkled her nose.
"What's a Canis Lupus?"
Wolf thought,
and scratched behind his ear.
"Well, I don't speak Latin dear,
but I think it might be me."

"If you don't want breakfast then,
what do you want?"
Thump thump thump went Rabbit's foot
impatiently.
Wolf hung down his head.
"Dear lady, I must confess,
you fascinate me, so fancy free,
yet wise and cautious too.
I only wish to be with you,
guard your hutch from beasts and storms,
and simply be a friend."

Rabbit thought and pondered,
pondered and thought.
"You do seem sincere.
Okay, pick up that hay
you made me drop."

Rabbit and Wolf walked
back to the hutch and talked
of many things,
the folly of nature, long-dead kings,
the difference between
a yarn and a string,
and to this day
they are the best of friends.

WOLF AND RABBIT CONTEMPLATE

Wolf and Rabbit sat beneath the setting sun
finshing the last of their supper,
peas and carrots, and mincemeat pie,
Wolf's personal favourite delight.

Wolf looked up at the darkening sky
and asked "Have you ever thought
upon the night?
The moon will soon
obscure the sun,
casting black on everyone."

Rabbit chewed a carrot,
stroked her ear,
was it just her,
or did she just not hear
correctly.

"What are you on about, Wolf?
Are you sure you didn't eat too much?"

Wolf sat back and took a pause.
"I like the night, and the moon,
the great pursuer,
huntress of a noble cause,
conquering light,
giving us time
to collect our thoughts
and meditate."

Rabbit got quizzical.

"So what of morning, Wolf?
The sun pursues, retreats,
as does the moon.
Every morning, you yawn awake,
I make some oatmeal,
and you ask,
where's the spoon?"

Wolf thought on this.

"Rabbit, you are right.
The night and day are equal.
Let us put this pondering to rest,
and agree that contemplating
on a full stomach is best."

RABBIT AND WOLF GO TO TOWN

Rabbit and Wolf sat down to dine.
Wolf said "Ahh, such fine fare, as usual."
Rabbit chewed her clover
with some disdain.

"Wolf, do you ever feel
our meals are just the same thing
again and again,
over and over, with all this clover?"

Wolf said, "Rabbit, perhaps
we should lapse in our routine.
I hear that Animal City is plush
with all exotic foodstuffs,
including the elusive rambutan."

"Rambutans? What are those?"

"I'm not sure, but hop on my back
and we shall visit Animal City.
I must warn you, it's a place of pity,
not everyone indulges in its treasures.
Some spend all on worthless leisure,
but we are on adventure here,
shall we go, my dear?"

"Yes, yes! Prance on!"

They marched through hill and dale,
wetlands, and the shaggy grass.
Animal City loomed on the horizon.

"It's so big, " Rabbit thought.

They entered the city gates
and a mouse-like creature,
large, with a tail as bald
as lake-tempered rocks asked,
"Say, can you spare a carrot?"

Wolf growled, and the rat scurried.
"Don't worry Rabbit, you are safe with me."

Rabbit was amazed.
Wide eyed she drank in
cherries, raspberries,
sweet baby greens,
pomegranates, plums,
apples serene,
carrots of every colour,
orange, white and red,
beets so sweet, in candy-stripe,
melons plump and oh so ripe.
Still, the rambutan was indeed
elusive.

"Wolf, how will we know
when we've found a rambutan?"

"I suppose we'll just know
when we see it."

Wolf and Rabbit wandered on,
through the streets and alleys.
Then a ragged mare, cart in tow,
approached them.

"Let me make for you a fine show of my goods."

She pulled the cover from her gifts,
exposing red-green fruit with shells and fronds.
"With fronds like these...try, try."

Rabbit said "They look like tiny hedgehogs!"

"Peel and eat, peel and eat," the mare piped in.

Rabbit and Wolf peeled and ate, and ate a lot.
In unison they said
"So good, divine, what are these,
and how can we make them mine?"

They looked at each other and murmered, "Ours, that is."

The mare smiled.
"These are the elusive rambutans you seek,
help yourself, there is no charge.
Just promise you will do me one favour,
in the future, should I ask."

"Absolutely," Wolf said.

Rabbit and Wolf
marched happily back to the hutch,
munching rambutan like experts,
dizzy and happy with their find.

Rabbit wondered though,
what favour
from the ragged mare's unhinged mind
might flow?

RABBIT AND WOLF HAVE A VISITOR

Rabbit and Wolf tended to
spring cleaning, morning dew,
and then a knock was heard
upon the door.

Rabbit said "Who might that be?"

Wolf said "Maybe it's the mouse I called
to fix the floor."

At the hutch was the mare,
the one that sold the rambutans.
"Rabbit and Wolf, I come to ask my favour."

Rabbit and Wolf looked at each other,
and wondered should they bother?
Their sheepish eyes said yes,
she did well by us,
we made a promise,
we must hear her story.

"A vicious bear has taken my child,
the ransom demanded was hardly mild,
I had to sell rambutan,
just to stop the bear from eating her!"

Wolf looked at rabbit and said
"Rabbit, we must do what's best."
Rabbit looked at Wolf and said
"It seems we're on a noble quest!"

Wolf said "friendly mare, no need for pay,
Rabbit, hop, we're on our way!"

RABBIT AND WOLF MEET A BEAR

"Quickly Rabbit, we must find the lair
of the awful kidnapping bear!"

Rabbit hopped on Wolf's back,
he cautiously sniffed the air
to catch the scent
of the elusive bear.

"It's this way Rabbit," so off they were,
through the woods, across the plains,
and into the dark, mysterious
Tanglewood Park.

"I'm scared, Wolf,
this seems a very nasty place indeed."

Wolf reassured her,
and caught the scent again.

"We're almost there Rabbit.
Let me do the talking."

Slowly, Wolf and Rabbit
approached the den.
The door was locked.

"Should we knock?"
Rabbit asked.

Wolf gingerly pawed the door
and steeled himself
for battle fierce. He feared
he might get pierced
by the angry bears giant claws.
There was a rustling in the den and then
the latch was opened and there was Bear,
somewhat lazy in gait,
with thick black hair.

"Hullo, what can I do for you two?"

Wolf and Rabbit looked at each other,
clearly puzzled.

Wolf said, "I'm here
to rescue the mare's child
from your unkind hands
before you eat her!"

Bear scratched his head and said,
"Why would I eat her?
The Ursus Americanus is vegetarian,
except for a treat here and there,
in moderation of course."

Rabbit and Wolf both cocked their heads
and said in unison, "What's an Ursus Americanus?"

Bear said, "Well, I don't speak Latin but..."

Wolf interrupted and said, "It's okay, we
only want to return the child."

"Come around the back,
she is harvesting my lovely blueberries
with the cubs, to bring back to the mare.
The berries here are very rare."

"It seems we have misjudged you Bear,"
Wolf said, a tad embarrassed.

Rabbit whispered in Wolf's ear,
"This is indeed an unexpected twist."

"Indeed it is, Rabbit, indeed it is."

BEAR CONTEMPLATES

Bear gazed into his big bowl of berries
and contemplated
on the strange events of the day.

"Why would the mare think
I kidnapped her child?
Is it my fierce demeanour,
or was it just the late hour
she came to visit?"

Bear hoped the mare
would like the berries.
One cannot live on rambutan alone,
and the wild fruit would fetch
a high price in Animal City.

Bear sighed and shuffled off
to tend the fire.
"Through all this muck and mire,
at least I made two friends today.
Post-haste, Rabbit and Wolf, to the mare.
Godspeed and good luck."

RABBIT AND WOLF CONFRONT THE MARE

Wolf ran quickly to the mare,
Rabbit on his back,
child and berries in tow.
The mare,
with clattering hooves,
and a voice so shrill,
yelled "Did you kill the bear?"

Wolf composed himself and said,
"No, dear mare, we did not kill the bear,
but we do have a surprise for you."

Mare's daughter ran out
from behind Wolf's cart,
berries in hand.
"Mommy! Look what I brought you!"

The mare sniffed the berries
and furrowed her brow.
"How dare you bring these to my house,
the wild filth of that fearsome bear.
Here, we eat rambutan. Take them back now!"

Rabbit looked at Wolf and said,
"You would think the mare would be happy
to see her child again.
The hour is late, and the woods are dark,
she can't possibly expect her daughter
to take the berries back, can she?"

Wolf thought, and said,
"Let's see what we can do."

"Mare, what is it you have against Bear?
He seemed quite nice,
generous to a fault even,
offering up this treasured crop
which would fetch a good price
in Animal City.
Look, your daughter has tears in her eyes,
she only wanted to please you.
Isn't it possible
you misjudged Bear?"

The mare,
hard as nails she was.
She huffed and strutted,
making much noise,
raising dust clouds with her hooves.
Then she looked at her lovely daughter's face,
and her armour melted
as if tamed by molten fire.

"Ahem, perhaps I was in the wrong,
I'm just so used to having to be strong
for her and me, it's a pity
it must be so. Thank you, my child.
Tomorrow we sell, and if you are good,
you may even get some sugar cubes."

Rabbit and Wolf looked at each other and smiled.
"A job well done, yes Wolf?"

"Yes indeed Rabbit."

The mare said,
"Rabbit and Wolf,
I don't have much money,
but I do wish to reward you
for returning my daughter,
and for showing me
the error of my ways.
I have two tickets to Oceanville
in Animal City.
Please take them,
you will meet creatures strange and wild,
and make many new friends."

"Why thank you," Wolf said,
"While we ask no reward,
we do appreciate the gesture."

Rabbit whispered, "I suppose it's off to Animal City again."

Wolf remarked, "I suppose it is Rabbit, I suppose it is."

RABBIT AND WOLF MEET A DOLL FIN

On their way to Animal City,
Rabbit looked at the tickets they received
from the mare and felt the need to speak.

"Wolf..."

"Yes, Rabbit?"

"It says here, that these tickets are good
for one meeting with a doll fin.
I didn't know dolls could swim,
but I suppose with a fin,
they could."

Wolf scratched his head. "That is indeed confusing, Rabbit."

Rabbit thought a bit and said,
"Why should we go,
just to see a fin?
A fin can't talk, converse,
smile, or even grin?"

Wolf felt an itch behind his ear.
"I guess we'll just see what's there, dear."

Off to Animal City they tromped,
and picked up a guide to Oceanville.
Still, the 'doll fin' remained a mystery.
"Psst, Wolf....this doll fin, do you think
it's a he or a she?"

"Rabbit, we shall see."

On it was to Oceanville,
a strange aquarium,
but quite pristine.
The ticketmaster said,
"Oh, free, come een! Come een!"

Rabbit and Wolf looked at each other
with similar thoughts in their heads.
Who was this creature,
and why did he speak so strangely?

Wolf asked, "Dear sir,
we are unfamilar with Oceanville,
and we don't understand your speech."

The ticketmaster said,
"Don't worry,
I just put on an accent for the tourists.
Nice to meet you,
I'm a dolphin, in case you didn't know."

Rabbit's eyes grew wide.

"Not a 'doll fin'?"

Dolphin said, "Nope, I have my own fins, thank you."

Then he lit up a cigar.

Rabbit said to Wolf,
"That sure stinks, doesn't it."

Wolf replied, "It sure does Rabbit,
it sure does."

Dolphin coughed and said,
"Sorry folks,"
and stubbed out the cigar
in the water.
"It's the only thing that takes away
the taste of dead mackeral.
That's all the trainer feeds me,
for doing awesome tricks."

Dolphin perched on his tail,
and rode backwards across the pool.

"That was amazing," said Rabbit.

Dolphin sighed.
"It's pretty impressive indeed,
but all I wish to be is freed,
join my friends in the ocean,
and eat live fish again."

Rabbit and Wolf were confused.
Wolf piped in, "You would eat your brethren?"

Dolphin said, "Ahem,
I'll have you know,
I am no fish,
I am a mammal."

"Oh," said Rabbit and Wolf in unison.

"Say, new friends,
do you think you could help me
escape this dreary pool?"

Rabbit and Wolf looked at each other
and thought it sounded like
another noble quest.

Wolf said, "We will help,
yes we will."

I'm still trying to figure out how it happens....I should think of something soon. I was going to have them bust the dolphin out, but that might be construed as encouraging civil disobedience and illegal activity, something not generally accepted in today's PC world of children's books. Lest we forget, Peter Rabbit was constantly stealing cabbages from MacGregor's farm, but that's neither hare nor there. Laughing
