Got Cable

Got xfinity today. First cable in over twenty years. I am still figuring out the control and checking what is on that I could not see before. I am already disappointed that Decades is not there. It was recently added on local air TV. On Sunday it airs Have Gun Will Travel. I looked briefly at the science and history channels. Not much there at the time. I will spend time checking more tomorrow.

@edgarblythe,
science channel is running an "every episode ever" marathon of MYTHBUSTERS. If youve not seen this it used to be a real cience show. (It hd degrded into a show that uses "teases" and "mining the clock" to develop viewer interest. I think, instead, it chased a lot away. BUT, at the beginning yers, it was really good.
They investigate and test urban myths usually using some science and using even more explosives.

@edgarblythe,
Turner Clasic Movies TCM is a gold mine of old (and often some a the best) movies .
They did a CHARLIE CHAN fest FEW month ago where Charlie Chan (played by a WASP ) would say things like
"number one son brain like basketball, both full of much air"

Alfred Hitchcock is a favorite for bried marathons and every Thursday PM, they play old Disney "True Life Asdventures" (its amazing how, after all these years of advanced technology And CGI, a travelogue on real film has a depth of field that is better at telling a story.
Also, Winston Hibler, one of the greatest off-stage narrators , till is the best at his craft.

@farmerman,
I used to see Disney True Life films in theaters, when a kid. I loved them. (Got a bit queasy when one featured the birth of a bison). I have been seeing Charlie Chan and Mr Moto on air TV every weekend. I want to see the old movies, because I never got to see lots of them.

Went out to see why Rocky didn't come in as expected. He was busy loving on the guy that buries the cables. The guy had the cable buried in my yard without a bark or notification from the dog that he was out there. I figure that if anybody breaks in some night, Rocky will be there to lick their hands and escort them to their car.

I just watched Quiggly Down Under. I saw it on free air TV once, but it turns out that version was so edited that it was like seeing a whole nother movie this time. I guess me and cable will be compatible.

@edgarblythe,
If your cable carries Nat Geographic Wildlife, there is a holiday marathon featuring ome little played in-depths about Canadian and US national parks and wild areas

@edgarblythe,
Also, TCM presents silent films usually late in the evening. I find them fascinating, and they are exceptionally clear.

@glitterbag,
I agree. Silent films can be really good.

Well, I sampled Game of Thrones, today. Had it on perhaps five minutes. In that time, a nude man and woman lay together, apparently sated from good love making. Perhaps not. But, as the man lay there, obviously having the time of his life, a knife slit his throat, in a close up scene and the camera dwells on his slit open throat as the man dies. Not my idea of entertainment. I watched something else.

@edgarblythe,
Not good for children to see such violence.

@cicerone imposter,
One of my big complaints in life. I believe children see too much too soon.

@edgarblythe,
I don't have any stats, but it does seem children violence have increased because of violence seen on tv and the movies.
I just typed 'children violence' and got over 168 million hits. Exposure to media violence by children is the culprit.

@Zerocoolo,
we get a lot of garbage because cables "bundle" a lot of crap so they can show the, say, DISCOVERY CHANNELS (with Discovery we also get 2 fuckin shopping channels and the Catholic Hour).
Im thinking of switching the whole TV to one of the other formats like APPLE Tv or Netflix

@farmerman,
There is a lot of garbage on there, for sure. Most of which seems constantly rerun.
