In 1954, Popular Mechanics showed its readers what a home computer might look like this year (2004).
attended quite a few (so-called) "computer conferences" sponsored by SPADE (systems planning and development exchange) in the 60's and 70's. our computer in the 60's was an IBM 1401 with 16 K (!!!) of storage and 2 (!!!) tape drives - later upgraded to an IBM 360 (WOW !). at one conference it was stated and demonstrated (with stats and graphs) that by the mid 70's there would not be enough electrical power available in north-america to operate and cool the masses of computers coming online ! both the 1401 and 360 required rather a lot of cooling power; we had to have a special air-conditioner installed - it was the size of two large wardrobes, about 8 feet by 8 feet by 6 feet ! those good ole' days ! hbg
Another PA special:
A cabel of insurance companies are releasing specially-bred coyotes all over rural Pennsylvania so that the coyotes will attack fawns, reduce the deer population and reduce the expensive car/deer collisions that cost the insurers more than two billion dollars a year.
