UNCLE!

(See Craven's ill-tempered remarks below? He doesn't know that I was engaged in edit mayhem with sozobe, and was mean to me!!! What a churlish pud. What a foaming wart! Sssshhh, don't tell him.)

I think anti-intelectualism is kin to penis envy. Sure arrogance is abrasive but often it's simple jealousy.

Being full of one's own opinions has little to do with intellect. Everyone has met a stupid person who hates "snotty" intellectuals but always thinks they are right.

"Anti-intellectualism" is curious. To dislike intelligence is goofy and self-defeating. I guess it could be attributed to jealousy, insecurity and other things...

blatham has said on more than one occasion that there is an actual American phenomena against intellectualism. I kid back and forth about it, as I've done here.

I think the guy who started the thread did so in good humor.
It was funny to me.
It's what some people do with their so-called intellect that I sometimes find fault with. Attempting to ridicule, manage and disenfranchise others is among the behavior I dislike.

Here I was, masking fury at Craven's smarty pants insult, ignorant of the fact he thought my earlier anti-intellectual comment {which was an inside joke} was serious. Of course, being a conservative, I'd completely forgotten my teasing edit, and thought Craven was a looney. It took me thirty minutes to discover that I was, in fact the looney.
Someone better stop me. This edit button thing is getting out of hand.

sozobe-- You don't know HOW easy.
Sometimes, I'm playing like a giddy child, and I turn around and am in knee deep poo, and pissed off to boot.

I don't feel like pissy poo boots tonight.

*Welcome Incogni! How nice to meet you here on
A2K... hope you enjoy yourself here as much as
I do. Great fun. Terrific people. What else could
a person want, well aside from winning the lottery
maybe.
*Actually I am not QUITE sure exactly what an
intellectual IS? I have had people tell me that
I am too intellectual, but I disagree. I think that
I am really quite practical, sensible and keep my
feet on the ground.
*When I think of an intellectual - I think of an
individual whose entire day is spent living inside of
their own head. Which for me - could and probably
would be disastrous.

Lash,

I agree with blatham 100%. I think it borders on an obsession in America. It's reflected in almost every segment of our society. IMO it derives from the intensely competitive American spirit. Copetition breeds excelence but also breeds poor sports who when unable to compete in one area (say, intelect) would rather deamean it and win elsewhere.

I agree with you that the incogni was just posting lightheartedly but you never know what can is the one with worms in it.

The object, Truth, or the satisfaction of the intellect, and the object, Passion, or the excitement of the heart, are, although attainable, to a certain extent, in poetry, far more readily attainable in prose.

The Philosophy of Composition.

I'm suprised you can read my last post, it's riddled with typos.

Lash I wasn't addressing anyone in particular. I've been angry about anti-intellectualism for a long time. The whole world is largely anti-intellectual.

Glad.

I had forgotten my edit, and it did look bad. I could understand why you might have been gunning for me.

Well, Oz popular thought sure is, and it sucks....

Most people who rail against intellectuals wouldn't know one if they fell over them....if we do not have a group of people whose role is to stand back and question, and research and ponder, then who are we?

Yes, yes I am. I got colors, I got patterns, I got tracers - I think I am, therefore I am; I'm an Intellectual!

Man, I just feel nauseous. Let me sit down on this textured rock here. Oh, man, that's a long way down. I am so Goddamn tall. How am I ever going to sit on that rock all the way down there? The fall might kill me.

Oh, wait a minute. I think I'm an intellectual now, too...
