Those around you see that you speak and act like a human. Do you profess to be more than a p-zombie? Can you prove it?

@Tuna,
Do you believe you're more than a mechanism? The challenge is directed at those who would say yes, but if you don't believe you are more than that, feel free to add your thoughts.

My voting record proves it. I haven't voted for a democrat for president since 1976...

That depends. What would you accept as proof?

@joefromchicago,
I don't think there is any proof. I assume you are more.

Can you, or anyone else, prove I is that?

Then your challenge isn't fair and you're not being honest.

It's a trick question. Doesn't mean somebody couldn't have knocked my socks off with an amazing answer. I would have gone the morality route. Or maybe G.E. Moore: you treat me like I'm more than a p-zombie, so if you say I'm not, you're being inconsistent.

It was one of my first threads (probably one of my last). Cut me some slack.

As defined by Wikipedia:

Quote:
A philosophical zombie or p-zombie in the philosophy of mind and perception is a hypothetical being that is indistinguishable from a normal human being except in that it lacks conscious experience, qualia, or sentience.

Such an individual would not be posting in this thread, nor any other thread.

@Tuna,
I can't believe you asked that question.

The Wikipedia article wrote:

Do you really think someone who is not sentient can post online? This may be a problem of you having a private, idiosyncratic definition of "p-zombie."

Not a trick question - those have answers. More like a rigged carny game.

Hunh?

Don't feel bad. A lot of people around here fall for crap like that, and I don't post much these days, so you may have better luck next time.

@Setanta,
A p-zombie is kind of like a computer pimped out with motion sensors, speakers, and locomotion equipment. It tells you that it experiences the world because it's programmed to say that. It's constructed so well that it can converse, apply logic, and do all the things a sentient entity would do including making mistakes and straying into the folly of arrogance and spite. It appears to be sentient, but this is an illusion. It's all programmed behavior.

Eliminative materialism says that all humans are essentially p-zombies. The alternative views are diverse, but include people like Nagel and Chalmers. Either path is kind of treacherous. It's a "pick your poison" situation.
