Willpower is the opiate of the deluded.

I so don't agree. 'Willpower' is real.' Mind over matter' is real. 'If there's a will, there's a way' is truth. At least, in my life.

Your heart may not be empty, eoe, but I suspect that kicky's is.

My comments weren't meant for everybody with an addiction problem. There are many reasons why people get caught up. But from what I've seen, an empty heart will surely get you there.

I'm trying to follow along, this is interesting.

I don't consider myself to have an addictive personality. I have been addicted to smokes, but I quite those when I really wanted to. I have done a variety of drugs and never gotten addicted to anything besides ciggarets. Alcohol could end up being a problem. But, it's not as of yet.

I think there's a combo of the two factors: empty-heart and willpower. And, each person who suffers with an addictive substance has a different balance of those two things. I think an empty heart gets you started on your way to an addiction and may get you hooked, but that will power may, in some cases, be the sole strength for getting out of an addiction (for some).

That statement deserves an explanation, kicky!

I know you hate your job, and you don't have a significant other. You're thinking of moving to Italy, and there's nothing much to keep you here. Explain what makes your heart full. No sarcasm...I'm genuinely interested.

Laughing I was just screwing with you, Eva.

But,

I don't think my heart is totally empty. I have a lot of fun in my life, it's just that right now, I'm feeling like I've been on auto-pilot for the past few years, and I'm looking for a change. It's just that I'm trying to decide what I should do for the next chapter of my life. Those things you mentioned that I don't have are the very things that I'm trying to steer my ship towards, that's all. I'm trying to figure out what I want right now, and how to go about getting it. It's not a question of having an empty heart, really. I don't know what all this has to do with addictive behaviors, I just wanted to show you that I'm not the sad sack that I may have made myself out to be here.

I'm allright, really.

Oh, I know you're alright, kicky! You're seriously thinking about going to ITALY! 'Nuf said!!!

(In fact, all this talk about chucking it all and moving to Italy is making me rethink my supposedly full, happy life. Want some company?! Wink I think I could afford it for about, oh, a couple of weeks.)

Actually, I'd be far more worried about you if you WEREN'T thinking about making some changes. You can't get anywhere if you don't take some chances. You know that, don't you? So....Go For It.

You're so damn cool, Eva. Thanks.

Although, if you want to come to Italy with me, you must know that there will be tanti intervalli sessualli e passionati.

Tanti bacci, mia carina...

Negative reinforcement!

Everytime you do something bad, slap yourself in the face with a dead Mackrel!

That should teach ya right quick.

(or make you crave cigarettes when you eat Mackrel...)

You -do- know that they smoke everywhere in Italy, right? Even in the airports in front of no smoking signs.
I quit by forcing myself to contemplate eating a really old piece of nicotine gum everytime I wanted a smoke. Also, I got a really nice, sweet, non-smoker boyfriend who didn't pressure me at all about quitting - which made me really want to quit. Also, getting regular exercise like walking/swimming everyday makes you really value lung capacity.

Eva, goddes, we need to send you to Italy! ... I don't have any money. But if I become a rich and famous artist I'll take you as a muse, K?

@kickycan,
My husband has an addictive personality or behavior. I have been reading a lot. I found something very interesting on the internet:

Life begins as a connected experience in the womb of our mother. When we're born and that physical connection is severed, we yearn to connect again. How we go about creating that connection and how well we succeed becomes the story of our life. People who make healthy and meaningful
connections with other people feel happy and fulfilled. (Research proves that the single most important factor that determines happiness in life is CONNECTEDNESS.) People who lack a real emotional connection with others will grasp at anything in an attempt to fill that void in their
life. That's what leads people to sex, drugs, alcohol, hours of mindless TV, falling in love over and over again with new people, or an obsessive commitment to money, success, work, or a hobby. These trappings offer a MOMENTARY filling. But the cause of the emptiness the person seeks to fill is a lack of a meaningful CONNECTION in their life.

In his case, it is totally true. Hope this helps Smile
