Breaker Tripped

I was attempting to disable the clock on my old electric range. I forgot to turn off power to the circuit before I removed the cover and I shorted the circuit. Instead of tripping the 50A breaker from its own circuit, it tripped the main 100A breaker on the panel. Is this normal? Should I replace the 50A breaker?
