Okay folks, here is some definitive proof that it is 44. This will be a long post.
Label the intersections in order, so the upper left corner is A, the top middle is B, the upper right is C, the upper left middle is D and so on. Then, I will list all of the possible triangles, by size, and try by letter.
HJG (16 small triangles)
LMH (16 medium-small triangles, total now of 32.)
FLH (8 medium large triangles, total of 40)
CAK (4 large triangles, total of 44)
Please don't try to dispute this, if you think you find a different triangle, look at the list again, and see if it's just named differently.
For pity's sake, bib, don't prolong this. 44, or, maybe 42 if Doug Adams is involved.

Nope I count 48.
The large diamond in the middle has a total of 12 triangles of different sizes,(4 large triangles, each containing 4 of the smaller triangles, plus 8 small triangles.)
Now, if you divide the pic into 4 parts, you'll get four squares with a cross inside. Each square has 8 triangles, times 4 squares is 32.
The large square surrounding the picture contains 4 large triangles.
So, yes, the answer is 48.
Duh... Should think before I speak. Sorry. I get 44 now.
44 for me now too I come to look at it again a couple months later!
