I laughed at my first italian pizza. It was in Florence, at ... a bowling alley. Well, we were going to see one of the Medici gardens, and pulled up to a hotel that was in our little guide book, a hotel that sounded very interesting and had some indicator in the guide description as being medium priced. The structure was very old, part of it first built in 1260, it is called Villa Villoresi. When we walked in the entry hall I nearly died from the splendour. So we went up to the desk and the lady said they had a room, it would be $250. a night.
That was back in 1988. We just stood there. I probably opened my mouth but didn't get words out. Then she said, as we are just opening for the season, it is available for $160. a night. I think my exhub said, "er...."
Then she said, without breakfast, $125. a night. And I said yes. Way over our budget, but Florence can be more expensive for hotels than many non tourist towns. We stayed there one night, in what turned out the be the matrimonial suite, but we decided not to eat in the hotel dining room, lest we spend the entire rest of the trip budget.
At a little after nine at night we went looking for a restaurant in the suburb of Florence this was in, Sesto Fiorentino. Everything was closed, chiuso..., it being a Monday. Thus the bowling alley cafe.
So, the pizza was round and thin and had mushrooms on it.
I picked up my piece of pizza and the mushrooms fell to one end...
Well, I've had better ital pizza since..
Eva, yes, one day we'll have to have an a2k Italia meet.
Villa Villoresi
Hmm, they didn't show our room, but it was as immense and elaborate as the first one shown, with different colors, and had two very tall sets of double doors out to the long balcony you see in one of the pictures.
Interesting, the prices don't seem to have gone up over the last fifteen years. Well, I highly recommend it as a place to stay. And I think we should have at least looked at the hotel menu, it probably is reasonable.
