At 4"x12" you are going to end up covering the entire piece. You want enough so that the joint compound (not putty! ) fills in the small gap created at the edges of the tape and you need to go far enough to get the edge feathered in so the patch isn't easily apparent. Usually you end up with a 8" - 10" line of coumpound on a seam.
