...if anyone here could help me identify an Artist and his/her painting. I've been cleaning out my parents home. I should add, that it was built in 1790 in upstate New York and was a stage coach stop between New York City and the State Capitol.

This was tucked away in a wall between an old icebox and cellar door. It's very dirty and has a beautiful frame. It's an oil painting of a cow in a field, there are other cows and a bull in the far background. I cannot make out the first name or initial but the last name is Reynolds. The frame has very interesting iron or steel brackets holding the painting in place with Patent Dates (I believe) of 1880.

Can anyone help?

Thanking you in advance!

@Moppietje,
The first Reynolds that springs to mind is of course Joshua Reynolds, who was primarily a portrait painter for the British aristos when everyone wore powdered wigs.

I am not aware of any cows in fields painted by him, unless of course one counts that one of the Marchioness of Bath, sitting by a tree.

@farmerman,
Sorry! Guess I should have taken photos and learned how to upload them first.

Here are some. Hope it works.

@Moppietje,
there were lots of primitive domestic scene artists in the Hudson Valley. Id say that you should try to get a catalog from some sales of 18th and 19th century Hudson River works. Many of tese primitive artists are quite collectible.

Its not a Cropsey or an F E Church but it could be one of the primitives, like Arthur Fitz-Williams or Ben Austrian.

Here is a different one found today in a closet nearby. Does anyone know anything about this one?

Thank you!
