Why did it have to be snakes?! The official a2k Snake Lovefest thread!

We have threads for animals in art, spiders, drop bears, sexy ostriches, Floridians, etc... so why don't we have a fan thread for snakes?

Throw in stories and photos of snakes in the wild and/or civilization that fascinate you. I'll start things off below!

@tsarstepan,
I used to have an office near Folsom California and our lab building was a large double wide office trailer with concrete steps and wrought iron railing. Every morning (before all the lab techs who were from India or Pakistan) I would go a unravel the little baby rattlesnakes from around the rought iron railing. They would curl up on the warming metal so they cpuld get their body temps up as the sun rose and warmed everything by radiation.

Some days Id have little box full of maybe 5 or 6 little rattlers and Id take em to the ranger of the AFB where we were located near. (We were mining gold from the old pressure washed sands from past gold mining.

The snakes were just as cute as that one on the opening shot. If you held em, thyed just stay and warm themse;ves on your hand. But dont ever put a finger near em. They can nail you just like an adult.

PS, black snakes (Im assuming thats what the little guy ws) are often mean little pricks. I got bitten right in that flap of skin tween your thumb an forerfinger and he just hung there biting you like a Maine blood worm.

@farmerman,
One time, in Corpus Christi, I saw a baby snake and picked it up. Right when it bit my thumb, I felt I recognized it as a Rattler. My thumb had such a thick callous from framing houses and such work that its fangs bounced off and it fell on the ground. I lost it. I could be wrong it was a rattler, but I don't think so.

My first career choice was herpetology, but I got lame guidance at university. As a teenager, I was a big fan of Bill Haast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Haast I used to catch snakes, feed them for a week or two, then release them. It all started when I got bit by a venomous one when I was around 10 or so. For some odd reason, my fear of snakes vanished after that.

Black Racers are most common where I live. But I have killed a few poisonous ones in 18 years here.

@FBM,
Do you stutter?

I have a theory about herpetologists (my theory was developed by coming up and fitting the working hypothesis to the evidence I collected over years of living in an out of museums)

@farmerman,
There's always the proof that St. Patrick, (an Englishman btw) drove the snakes out of Ireland by cutting off their heads and turning them to stone. (Proof if you happen to be a snake yourself that is.)

@izzythepush,
The snakes didn't leave because of any St Patrick. It was the weather.

@izzythepush,
looks like a 3d print of a fossil ammonoide eh?
Jurassic?. after that the Seas became muddy as the continents split and the volcanic **** messed up the pH, so many of these critters died and became Englands national fossil (after the Queen mother of course).
Id guess its a Vermiceras or Sherpelceras

@farmerman,
We have a few Jurassic coastlines. Dorset coast is called the Jurassic coast. Part of the coast in Essex is crumbling, they called that Jurassic, but I heard of a case of someone finding a fossilised thigh bone which had to be reported to the police as all human remains do regardless of age.

@izzythepush,
In Arizona a couple sank two biology skeletons in lake Meae. They put the skeletons on lawn chairs and stuck sunglasses on em.
A diver found the skeletons and called the cops. Fun ensued as a big forensic investigation began. By the time the forensics lab got to the bones and discovered they were made of plastic and were fake bones, the "crime scene" had been cordoned off and divers were looking for more clues. The guy responsible turned himself in and, after a tongue lashing , was not charged and the cops had a press conference.
It made the Sat Washington Post

Have you told Patches about this? He would appreciate the photo. After all, it's rather convincing. Smile
