I understand that the first automobiles were right hand drived. Which company manufacuctured the first left hand drive?
One night in 1921 Henry Ford was designing his Model T. He had a few too many brandys and when he woke up he discovered the steering wheel on the wrong side. Rather than admit mistake, he insisted this is the way cars in America should be driven from them on.
Of course, I'm just making this up...
Nick Fun is close to correct. It was Henry and it was the Model T, but it was 1908. The reason that he decided on left hand drive is a matter of conjecture. Some think he did it just to be different. I dunno.
Please note that there were various prototypes and small run models built that used left hand drive, but the model T was the first to make it standard on cars in the US. It was so damn popular, (the car not LHD), that everyone else just had to follow suit.
