Does anyone know how many churches there are in Britain? I mean actual buildings, including synagogues, mosques, temples etc.

Someone started to collect photos of all UK-churches: he' up to 2,100 by now - seems to be a very low number, when you look at the list and see, which are missed from the region, where you live

I don't think, you'll find a complete list somewhere.
(There are nearly complete lists of hisroric churches, new churches, churches from different beliefs etc, mostly for a county, a diocese ...)

Welcome to A2K, btw, delbow66 !

Not sure how you would get that info delbow66. The government would probably keep records in the tax department but they aren't readily available. The only thing I can offer is that back in 1851 they did a special census of all places of worship in England and Wales. There were about 34,000 back then. Scotland was done seperately but at the moment I can't seem to find a link.

Will be back if I find more.

There's a church in pretty much every village, a couple in each town an hundreds in cities like London. Cities will also have more non-Christian places of worship (though a village near my parents' house has a Buddhist temple, which peeks strangely above the very English trees and landscape!).

The 34,000 noted by Adrian will be a good start - some have been converted into appartments (as congregations have delcined), others have been built and there are MANY more non-Christian centres (thanks to immigration in the last 153 years!). I'd guess 40,000.

Thanks very much for everyone's input, and thanks for the welcome. 40,000 seems like a reasonable estimate. I'll go with that for now.

ive heard that there are thousands of mosques in england due to the fact that if you class your house as a religious building then you dont have to pay council tax ,as religious buildings are exempt from tax.
dont know if thats true but if it is im now writing this from my pulpit

Since there live definately less Muslims than others in England, and, I'm sure (I know some personally  ) these others don't like to pay taxes either - why, do you think, iceman, don't they change their houses to temples, chapels, churches etc?

Actually, there about 600 mosques in the UK for the about 1.5 million Muslims - that's for the United Kingdom, iceman, not just for England!

All are welcome at the Orchard Mosque (fridays) the Old Synagogue (Saturdays) and the Harlow Free Church (Sundays). That should win some tax rebate.

I have an idea; you could use Yellow pages and see how many churches it produces.

Iceman's right, by the way; because of the demand for mosques, even small houses are turning into them, even if they're not officially registered. As well as being free from tax, religions are also charities in their own right under British law... hmm.

Thought it was true,hmmmmmm........... i dont have anything against anyone of religious beliefs but perhaps certain legal loopholes should be closed.
or by next year if we all class our homes as religious buildings our beloved government will be a bit short of cash to squander Razz

1.5 million divided by 600 = 2500 muslims per official mosque
1.5 million divided by family of four muslims = 375,000 mosques
375,000 mosques NOT paying average of £1000 council tax = £375million

Actually, I've some other information - a look at the Chancellor of the Exchequer's website could give you some help, too.

However, even if this were true - why do you think
a) that only Muslims act so,
b) that all Muslims live in a family of four?
