The ever-mysterious melodic...throwback performer, Leon Redbone:

A Navy friend of mine had a Redbone album. I had not a clue until he played it for me.

@edgarblythe,
Around about the mid- to late-70s I saw him in person at a well-known outdoor concert at Tanglewood in Berkshire in Western Mass. One of the groups was Orleans and a bunch of others were there. His music was the highlight for me.

Back in the days when his voice was very melodic: "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again"

@ossobuco,
There was a time I was quite a Wilson Pickett fan, by way of going dancing with a boyfriend at the oldie beautiful but now gone Ambassador Hotel, which had a band we liked. No, Wilson wasn't there, but they covered Midnight Hour. Of course I listened to the real Wilson on the radio.

@Ragman,
I did get to hear Ray Charles. Top of the balcony at the Shrine.

That was around late '63, I think; that was my first serious boyfriend, who taught me a lot before we broke up.. in a relatively short time. I blame his mother re our demise. But part of who I am is what I learned from him about a lot of subjects.

His mother may have been right.

@Ragman,
It was a big theater in Los Angeles, the Shrine Auditorium.

Well, how big - it was big to us then.

@ossobuco,
Ahh ok. Thanks. That must've been fun. My first concerts were in coffee houses Beacon Hill and Cambridge...around 1965/1966 ..and the old Boston Gah-den...Eric Burdon and The Animals.

I've had some limited vacation-time exposure to So Calif. in '80; then again in late '80s. I'm vaguely familiar with a few venues.
