Hi everyone,

I have a forklift charger, it's plug has 4 flat pin and 3phase power 250v 30A rating(written on the plug).

Upon checking it seems to be a NEMA 18-20 type, I cannot find this socket in my country and planning to rewire it to NEMA 10-50.

What does the meaning of W X Y and Z?
I know W-white
X and Y - hot wire
Z is what? where is the ground?

Thanks!

@ipogram,
Your receptacle is a 20 amp, not so a 30 amp. The 30amp Nema has the L shape. Check the W in the link, on 30 amp receptacle configurations.

http://www.garland-group.com/docs/uploaded/gar/document_catalog/Document%20Catalog%20Files/nema%20Plug%20Guide.pdf

I won't modify the four wire receptacle for a three wire receptacle.

On one hand, The forklift must have a safety prevention when using neutral and ground separately for charging and use.

But, you must check why the kind of contradiction between the 30amp written in the plug of the forklift while the shape belongs to a 20amp device. Check the forklift manual.

On the other hand, if the forklift requires a three phase (three hot) plus ground, then you can't modify it at all.

Check the following link for reference

http://www.motionlabs.com/downloads/ConnectorChart.pdf

You better replace BOTH, plug and receptacle by updated ones with the ground having a half moon shape, this kind of new receptacles and plugs must be available in your country, or at least, are available in other countries so you can buy them online.

@carloslebaron,
1. Yes sorry, the receptable is a 20AMP, not 30 AMP.

hmmm.. yes I believe so also that neutral and ground seperately for charging use has safety prevention.

Its just that, I cannot find the Nema 18-20 socket in my country..

My TCM forklift came from Japan, I imported it and I am from Philippines which uses Single phase 220V.

I bought a Phase generator locally which converts Single phase 220V to 3phase 220v using 10HP 3phase motor. And planning to use it to charge my electric/battery operated forklift.

What is the best way to add a ground on my phase converter output?

** I traced my connector to receptable using multitester, and also saw "W" is labelled as GROUND with green color wire.

Is there a chance that this setup is a 3 hot (X,Y,Z) and 1 ground(W that was used as G?)?

Avoid all that work.

The receptacle you need is online for $26.00 and can be shipped to other countries. (click the "Check Shipping Rates" box)

I know that "improvising" is very common in several countries in order to make things work while saving lots of money, but what I have posted is the further I can help, because I have no idea of what you will use (size of wiring, the forklift manual to verify the requirements, etc.) For this reason I just can suggest the "sure way" which is the use of the proper devices.

@carloslebaron,
Thanks for your help !

I am able to "improvise" it, and it now works!

Basically, 3 Hot wires 220v connected, and the Ground is left hanging, as what I have available now is a 3pin,3phase receptable and socket. I know it is not acceptable, I will be upgrading next time to 3phase 4pin to ground it properly.

Thanks.
