how hard is it to change a spark plug... or how much should I expect the mechanic to charge?
Changing a spark plug is simple. The problem in some modern vehicles may be getting to the thing. I wouldn't know how much a mechanic charges as I've always done it myself, but again, with modern vehicles, they don't need changing nearly as much as older vehicles did.
I just got my spark plugs changed ('98 Saturn)--they were a bit difficult to reach, so I hired it done. Monro Brake & Muffler charged ~$80. However, they didn't change the wires, and the cheap spark plugs they put in fried in about a month. The local Saturn dealership changed the plugs & wires (with better quality plugs) for around $200.
(I'm still fighting with Monro to try to get the $80 back--if you hire the job done, I would probably recommend paying a little more to go to a dealership, unless you have a trusted mechanic; definitely avoid the quick service chains like Monro, Speedy, etc.)
$80.00? $200.00? Sure glad we've got two honest mechanics in town.
In Connecticut they look at the state average income and charge accordingly, which means the CEO of General Electric and the stock boy at Wal-Mart get averaged and charged the same.
