Sheridan was a playwright in the 1700s. He wrote a play, 'The Rivals,' which was a complete flop; he rewrote it and it became rather popular. Despite the plot's being vaguely interesting, nearly everyone accepts that all the characters are stereotypes (especially Captain Absolute, a really painful stage Irishman, made worse by the fact that Sheridan was another Irishperson who pretended not to be Irish ) and the play relies more on verbal mistakes ('perpendiculars' instead of 'particulars'-- how my side is aching ) than on character development.
