A mayor in Massachusetts is outraged that someone stole a statue of the baby Jesus from a church’s nativity scene and replaced it with a pig’s head.

Haverhill mayor James Fiorentini said the desecration had “all the elements of a hate crime”.

The parish priest noticed the statue had been taken from the creche at Sacred Hearts Roman Catholic Church on Christmas morning.

Police said the pig’s head left in its place appeared to have been recently severed, and investigators were seeking help from butcher shops and pig farms. Police say the perpetrator could face animal cruelty charges.

A neighbour replaced the baby Jesus with one from her own creche.

A baby Jesus figurine was also stolen from the nativity scene on Greenfield Town Common, likely before dawn on Christmas Eve.

@Miller,
Stupid prank, yes. Not sure how this qualifies as a hate crime.

@engineer,
The funny thing is, if it were an offense against a non-religious group, if would be unconditionally labled a hate crime; however, because it is a religious group, you claim it is just a 'prank'.

I would say the least it would be is vandalism, and/or theft.

@InkRune,
If it were an "offense" against a non-religious group, it wouldn't have even make the crime reports section of the newspaper, much less having the mayor comment on it. People vandalize Christmas displays all the time. Inflatable Frosties and Santas are particular targets.

@InkRune,
Vandalism/theft, sure. Hate crime, no.

And since you didn't say that in the previous post, you aren't repeating it.

@Miller,
Vandalism/theft/prank for sure.

For it to be a hate crime (as defined in Canada at least), there would have to be a lot more to the story.

Sounds like kids or teenagers to me. When I went to a rural part of Ireland you would see statues of the Virgin Mary by the side of the road and the local kids would leave cigarettes in their mouths or lipstick on her lips.
