Writing a book, and hoping for an answer from someone who knows medicine.
If a person took a beating, and they got a punctured lung from a rib broken by this beating, would they be able to survive without medical attention? If so, what risks would there be? If not, how long could they survive?
And either way, what symptoms would they have? What would an onlooker be able to notice?

Depends on the severity of the pneumothorax. But it's not something that's going to kill you unless the broken rib lacerates a major blood vessel. Even if you lose the use of the whole lung, you can still make it with just the remaining lung. It will be extremely painful, though, and your ability to move around will be seriously diminished. I'm pretty sure someone would notice that you're not moving normally, and more so if you had to do something as strenuous as a couple flights of stairs.

@FBM,
Okay. Thank you. That's what I needed to know.
