Brandy comes from the Dutch word brandewijn, ("burnt wine"), which is how the straightforward Dutch traders who introduced it to Northern Europe from Southern France and Spain in the 16th century described wine that had been "burnt," or boiled, in order to distill it. The origins of Brandy can be traced back to the expanding Moslem Mediterranean states in the 7th and 8th centuries, Arab alchemists experimented with distilling grapes and other fruits in order to make medicinal spirits.

Spirits, under Gordon Brown's budget tendencies, have gradually become cheaper on the alcohol % relative to beer. Is there any reason for this?

This could be Mr. Brown's carrot so you will vote his Government back in again next time. Politicians are a cunning lot you know.

Know-how is a combination of intelligence and skill. Society generally rewards those who have it.

Proportions are what I always look for in a lady when I am appraising her for the purpose of deciding whether to chance my arm. A lady can get away with almost any kind of intellectual standard with me providing her proportions are adequate.

Adequate proportioned ladies may be your taste. I'll stick with a slender lady equipped with brains.

Budget planning is simply to enter all your expenses and your income on a piece of paper. You can then work out how much money you've got left and provide yourself with a budget summary.

Summary justice is probably justifiable in cases that expect people to begin attempts at witty sentences with a word like "summary". When a popular game is stalled for four days it's obvious nobody fancies it.

It is a word used by people with limited education. They are usually advised to go back to school and expand their vocabulary.

Vocabulary extension can only be achieved by wide and eclectic reading
and those who have applied themselves to such a task can easily tell those who haven't, because they chose to use their time in other ways, although the latter cannot identify the former as they don't have the verbal capacity to do it. This, of course, does not mean that they are not highly skillful in those capacities they have chosen to develop and fully as deserving of admiration because, after all, wasting time decorously is a very difficult task as one can easily see in those who have chosen to perfect the art of spending money.

Money has been around since time began but how may are aware of the following little titbit. The word "dollar" was used by Shakespeare and derives from "thaler" the name of a European coin.

Coin culture is what Jesus went into bat against. Possibly his keen insight saw the eventual outcome from a mathematical viewpoint and he was punished for it.

It is not just crappy when sentences suffer from meaningless words, it's almost outrageous. Unless it, specifically answers actual questions, it doesn't mean anything.

"Anything Goes" was a musical written by a number of people, the songs provided by Cole Porter. The plot, originally involving a mad bomber on a cruise ship, was deemed a tad insensitive and required extensive and hurried changes when reality stepped in and over 125 people were burned to death on such a ship.

Ship board romances were very common in the days of Empire when wives were being transported back and forth between the various outposts and England. It seems the long voyages had an effect on ladies which their domestic duties distracted them from indulging in.

In my extensive travels around the world I have often noted such dalliances. Take a trip on the QEII and you will witness it is still going on.

On the subject of Vladimir Putin, apparently he was 'the sort of boy you don't notice' at school. This attribute probably made him a good KGB agent.
