A friend has a painting of Japanese origin that is supposed to be a 100 years old in 2015. The title he was told is "The Secret". The artist's signature is in Japanese (an old style?). How can he get information about the painting and ascertain a value? I can provide a photo.

A photo would be helpful. Is it a block print?

There are a lot of ways to determine if a painting is an antique. One is by check the BACK of the painting. The canvas stark should not be white or light colored mostly, old paintings are yellowed with age.
