@bennattod,
sorry again, gumpy 01, I didn't see your last post before I typed my next one.
Any chance of a clue for #42? I'm not a cinema-lover (though I did know 9) and seem to have googled every Mildred in the known universe without getting anywhere. I can see what it ought to end in, but even that's been no help.

Oh dear, now I've replied to the wrong person! Put it down to stress about an erratic boiler and the possible outcome of the referendum.

@gardengnome,
Try a parent of 'J. Norrington' character.
Still bewildered by 25 & clues. Will plug away!

@Opsimath,
Q14 I believe I'm looking at the correct date 11, but as I can't see an obvious answer then I guess I'm not.

I think I've cracked 25 now. If the answer is as Teutonic as I think it is, then I've never heard of the character/series in the longer clue? Learn about something new every day!

@Ramires7,
Thank you Ramires7, also to bennattod. I would never have got there. Now I'll follow the clues for 14.... goodness knows why I enter a general knowledge (well, mostly) quiz when I don't know anything about cinema or football! I'll leave 31 for next week.

Q14 I can't see that any of them played later in the month. Sorry to be so thick! Any further nudge welcome.

@gumpy01,
I don't even try on the mensa questions, otherwise I'd end up screaming. I'd been going round in circles on #14, very nearly getting there several times, until I realised what was meant by 'incomplete sequence' ('Leave one out at random from time to time'?). As you say, just 31 to go now.

@gumpy01,
14: Annually played!
As to 31, might have a break for weekend and slog away again next week {spent ages to no avail}. If anyone makes a breakthrough put us out of our misery with just a little hint please

re #31, I'm just going to go for a fictional detective who I know had a brother and sister; I have most of the books concerned, but don't have the time or the inclination to read them all before Friday. Better than leaving it blank, anyway.

@gardengnome,
Lord Peter Wimsey must be a good possibility then! Sherlock Holmes surely too obvious!

@sophocles,
Q31. The nickname is not Stalky, it is of the titles of the Just So stories.
Sister rather than Brother.

@sophocles,
Yes, I was thinking LPW. But there's also Inspector Lynley and possibly Roderick Alleyn. May be more.
