My wife told me that this full moon is very special, and won't be repeated for another 84 years. Took it from my back yard.

@cicerone imposter,
Every 14th full moon is a supermoon. So, how many hundred millions have there been so far? Yes, very special. Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh.

@Brandon9000,
The full moon and perigee (aka proxigee full moon, "supermoon") realign in periods of about one year and 48 days.

(The term "supermoon" comes from astrology [sic!], and according to that pretty generous definition, there are 4 to 6 supermoons each year.)

Super Moon casts its spell on the Earth

It will be another 20 years before the moon comes as close as it has in the current cycle. Photo / Andy Morris

Sky-gazers in awe of last night's Super Moon witnessed the closest and largest full moon of the year.

At its closest point, the moon will be 356,896km from Earth - the closest since 1930. It should be visible again tonight.

There are usually between four and six Super Moons each year.

According to University of Canterbury astronomer Associate Professor Karen Pollard, the next Super Moon cycle is on September 9.
