What is the name of the famous New Year song and what are the words. Can you tell me anything about this song?

"Auld Lang Syne" is the title.

The basis of this is the Scots tradition of "Hogmanay", supposedly a pagan ritual to celebrate the turning of the season. It then re-emerged as a sort of reaction to the High-Church Christmas foisted on the Scots by the English ("Hoots mon, I kin nae take this shite. And a canne gie you any more fra the dilithium crystals either, Cappen).

These days it's an excuse for a giant piss-up. Presumably anyone left standing sings the song and orders another round.
