Don't ask me why (because i don't know--probably just the era), but the Debbie Harry made me think of "Neunundneunzig Luftballons," (99 air balloons), a 1984 international hit by the German group Nena. Nena is Gabriele Susanne Kerner, the lead singer. It's a sort of anit-war song, but not specific to any war. Here's the original:

Here's the English language version, which apparently has different lyrics (i don't do German, so what do i know?). This also has different production, less acoustic and more electronic.

@Setanta,
Which in turn reminds me of Katy Melua's 'Nine Million Bicycles' - Very Happy

I am then reminded of 10,000 Maniacs, with their lead singer Natalie Merchant . . .

we're not on a Mac - maybe it's still on a Canajun license as it was just released?

I'm glad to see this thread reviving . . .

This Billy Holiday song was one of her most popular, but it bothered her that people didn't seem to understand, or to care, that it's about lynching.

@Setanta,
Also, I might mention that today would be Billy H's 100th birthday if she were alive. However, were she alive today and 100 yrs of age, she might really have a worse case of the blues.
