I have 12 lights that use about one-half amp each, they are about 400 feet from the panel, what gauge wire should I use to keep from having a to much of a voltage drop?

It all depends on how much voltage drop you can tolerate. E = IR so looks like 10 ga will give you a drop of 2.4 v
