Data Imputation

Hi everyone,

I'm a Transport Planning student and currently working on dissertation project involving UK national census data. In that dataset there's no information about sample income levels, and my supervisor suggested to impute it from other datasets that include information on income, using regression imputation.

From what I've understood before, data imputation is to replace missing values of responses by the method. Is it actually possible to do imputation to make a new variable in my dataset? Can someone please shed a light on this?
