Do I need significant sample sizes (testing students) if we use hypothesis testing?

If I have pretest scores for 100 students and post test scores for 100 students (50 in control and 50 in experiment group), is this enough to find statistically significant results if I use one-tail hypothesis to test if our intervention influences test scores? What if the pretest (baseline) scores are different between the two groups?

@willnovy,
All depends what sort of discriminator and how rare it is that you're looking for. Ask the TA or read the book or e-mail the instructor.
