Fix wire/cord for a lamp - Don't know polarity

The wire of my lamp got cut and I would like to fix it by plugging in an extension cord. I understand the following tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnncXVpoL3g

But I don't know how to determine the polarity of the two part of the wire (+/-) in order to fix it. There is no ground. There are no colors either. Please help!

@evanston,
Hi, the answer to your lamp cord is , if you look close at the cord,one side has a ribbed edge the length of the cord, that is the neutral/ white, that goes to the silver screw on both sides. The smooth side is hot/black, goes to the gold or black screw. The lamp will work if it's not correct, but the code says the center of the socket shall be the hot and the outer cup needs to be the neutral for safety.
