Bad luck attached to objects

Ever since I got a certain pet I have had bad luck. Not just regular bad luck but we (the pet and I) seem to have a lot of the same bad problems now. I am going to sound loony no matter what but I've become superstitious about this. I'm going to ask this even though I know I'm going to sound crazy. If you have something that brings you bad luck should you give it away or break it (in this case wait until the animal dies)?
