It’s really difficult for me to understand the usage of the words “man” and “human.” I would always use the word “human” instead of “man,” after all it invelves both “man” and woman.” However, I think “human” is much lesser used than “man,” or not? E.g. I would say “the human of today,” or “the human of future” – meaning a general person living nowadays or in the future. Or I would say something like this: “The(?) human has the ability of planning different things.” Or: “There is an unknown being of the human, which is…” (Maybe the right choice is “one” in the latter case, I don’t know.) I can’t judge if these can be considered some kind of comparisons with animals – as far as I know, “human” should be used only in such cases, but suppose no word is said about animals.

Why not make it:

Mankind has the ability to plan.

@PUNKEY,
Maybe it could be understood as if people do a collective planning, or not? And there are many cases when it's surely not a solution.
E.g.: Here, on the ground, it's a footstep of a (hu)man.
This cave was a residence of a (hu)man.
So I keep wondering if these are comparisons with animals, though it's not said but maybe meant, that it's not a footstep/residence of some animal.

@KaJe,
IN YOUR SAMPLES, using "human" would be appropriate.

@KaJe,
One diff, KaJe, is that "Man" is so much more often used as a noun and "human" as an adjective

In noun form yes "The human" is more likely comparing him with another form of life: "The human has a more pronounced tendency to believe something completely absurd that does his dog." Of course as adj you could say "The human specie"
