If a newspaper reporter fakes a news story and gets fired for it, can he/she sell the film rights to the story about the faked article?

If the story was purposely faked, maybe not; many states makes it illegal to profit from a felony. I would imagine the copyright for the story itself be held by the newspaper. In any case, the newspaper can sue for damages re: credibility, if they choose, or at least, tie it up in the courts seeking injunctions and restraining orders.

I wonder if any newspaper has tried that -- and won. I don't remember any. I considered Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair, Janet Cooke, and Jack Kelley).
