I am getting ready to run electrical to a 30x30 garage that currently has no electrical to it. I have an electrician coming out to connect service to the new panel in the shop but the shop has no insulation or heat. I will be using a torpedo heater during the winter. My question is, since I plan on running 12-3 wire throughout the garage for lights and outlets, do I have to run UF because of the cold weather and temperature changes or can I use NM wire?

@etoh,
You can use NM cable in your garage but it must be protected from physical damage if it is run exposed. If it is within a wall that you will be covering with sheet-rock or plywood you can run the NM in the wall. If you run the NM cable in the wall and then insulate, be sure to not run more than a total of nine conductors through the same hole in the studs (example: three- 12/2 and one- 12/3), anything more would require that you adjust the ampacity for each conductor per table 310.15(B)(2)(a) of the NEC. because all those conductors are surrounded with insulation and run together.
