Cant figure simple wiring

I purchased a Lutron CTCL153PHD-WH-C dimmer for my sons room. I have two black wires (that run the current to another bedroom), that run together and two white ones that run together and one red. When testing I touched the red and one black wire together and the overhead light went on (three halogen track light), and it worked......went to do something, went back to install and it doesn't work anymore. Can anyone help me?
