I'm having trouble with a sentence I'm trying to write. Which of these is correct? Is there a better way of putting it?

Italian is similar to Spanish; they are both Romance languages, so they are related.

@Setanta,
Brilliant, Set.

I hate the usual tragic stuff, but this is Opera that I could easily sit and enjoy.

@Lordyaswas,
That and The Marriage of Figaro are lots of fun--two of my favorite operas.

Geno a toughie. Technically that comma should also be a semi but still awkward unless you change the first one to a period

So I consulted my Better Half, who is much smarter than I, and she agreed the semi is awkward

Though technically maybe also incorrect I'd have written it altogether without the comma (My BH agreeing with this too). Otherwise maybe

Italian is similar to Spanish: [or "because" or "inasmuch as"] they are both [or "both are"] Romance languages, thus [or "so"] related.
