I am going to install a pool heater heat pump that requires a 40 amp two-pole breaker. The run from the distribution panel is about 140 feet. What size wire do I need to use? It is 240 volt

#6 CU will give you a little over 5-1/2 vd@ 140ft with a 40amp load on single-phase.
