Under U.S. law if the government breaks a law in prosecuting a defendant, he/she gets off on the charge (or is it gets a retrial).

Do other countries use this system? Or do they instead punish the wrongdoer in the criminal justice system (e.g., the policeman)?

We punish the guy who screws up, at least at the DA end of things. It's called prosecutorial misconduct. Internal affairs also looks into police officers who screw up if it appears their acts were malicious/intentional (e. g. planting evidence, as opposed to reasonable mistakes).

Somehow Gol I am reminded of letting Assad off the hook if he only lets us destroy his stockpile of chems
