Can anyone tell me what this was, and should I have been worried about it, if it's actually a virus, and how you get one of these without opening an attachment?

What that tells you is that your antivirus nailed it for you. It was a baddy, allright, but, as detailed, a trojan, not a virus. See This Thread, particularly the second post there, from Monger, for more info on where the junk comes from, and what to do to protect yourself from it or rid yourself of it if all else has failed or been ignored.

That's the reason I wanted XP working. 'cause my antivirus and all the updates are free.
