There is lot's of information about how parents CAN cover their adult children up to age 26 under Obamacare. But are parents REQUIRED to cover adult children up to age 26, or can parents drop adult children from their insurance plans? In the specific instance I am referring to, the child has been on the parents insurance plan their entire life. The child is getting married (at age 21) and the parent wants to drop the child from their insurance plan. Can the parent do this, or is the parent REQUIRED to keep the child on their insurance plan until age 26 or until the child decides to go get his/her own insurance coverage?
Thank you.
@peezle,
The adult child is required to have insurance under the new law. You are not required to pay for it. You can keep a child on your policy, but are not required to.
@peezle,
What DOC said. The law lets you, but you do not have have to.
@peezle,
Under BCBS of Michigan, good luck trying to drop your child unless they are getting married. We have a son who we haven't even heard from in almost 2 years and they are telling us that we are required to have him sign a form requesting to be dropped from my husband's employer-sponsored plan. That also means we are required to have an additional $360 taken out every month to cover someone who could care less about even talking to his family. It is supposed to be to cover our "dependents" as defined under the Internal Revenue Code, and he's clearly not our dependent. But under the rules as implemented, that seems to be a mere technicality that they chose to ignore.
