So Fox is going to have a new show about turning 'ugly ducklings' into beauty queens through the use of plastic surgery.

I was hoping this was a joke, but I'm afraid it isn't.

I think this is a horrible idea. How shallow can we get??

It is shallow, but if I were an ugly woman, I'd be up for it. We are shallow, whether we want to admit it or not, so if these women can get an edge, why not?

I JUST heard this ad on the radio and I said to myself... "I GOTTA get back on a2k and tell them about this" (I've been mia for a bit) so I came here FIRST thing to post to find out someone beat me to it....

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard and I can't believe they are actually going to do this. I think the entertainment value might be high, but only because of all the jokes that will follow. For instance, I was wondering.... Those people that win (the absolute ugliest)... is that really... an honor? You GOTTA hope you dont' get the spot, atleast you know there are a few more people out there who are uglier than you Rolling Eyes

Hmmm... Wonder when they will be taking applications for free liposuction *begins to prepare resume*

Some people....

I think our TV programming is making our culture look pretty pathetic. I wonder how many of those women saw their new body, and regretted changing it.

I saw the first episode...it was really depressing! I cried twice.

How the show works, as best as I can figure, is each episode shows the whole process for two girls. They show the girl's "audition" tapes, interveiws with their families, and doctors recomendations. Then the girls are put in rooms with NO MIRRORS. For three months, they exercise, recoperate, diet, and attend counselling. At the end of the three months, the girls see their reflections for the FIRST TIME, then one of them is chosen to compete in the pageant.

First, it seems the pageant isn't such a big deal. I mean, if it were me Id take the free surgery and go home. But maybe they'll make it more interesting later.

The girl who won was tragic. She was just a nice girl who really wanted to be pretty. She had such a good attitude about it, that was what made sadder. Her husband wouldn't answer her phone calls...when he did he was very short and disinterested...her dad told her teachers not to expect much from her...but she was still smiling. Heartbreaking.

One of the strangest ideas for a show Ive ever seen.

The girl was already married, and felt she needed to be prettier??? I can't say I blame her husband, but gosh that's sad. Much more sad than I thought.

I caught part of the show this week, just enough to see what kind of cosmetic surgery they were having done.

That fat replacemnt under the eyes doesn't last. I know of cases where the fat slides down the cheeks and looks just aweful. I wonder if they warn the girls about that.

One of my oldest clients is a plastic surgeon. The new techniques (which are proprietary) do not allow the fat to migrate. I get kind of a kick out of the idea that for once plastic surgery isn't just available to Republican trophy wives.

"Republican trophy wives"?? The only people that I know who have had surgery are liberal strippers who want to be in Playboy... and a few others. None of them are republican, or wives.

I read a review of this show in which the critic suggested that the the looks the women have after the process makes them look like guys in drag. Sounds depressing, all right...

Yes, I'm sure you have the experience to know there are no Republican trophy wives gettings face lifts. My experience working with mostly right wing conservative Repubicans in my business is nearly all the wives have had plastic surgery. It's natural in the entertainment world as their faces are their income.

I agree, D'Artagnan, but they do look better than they did and they seem happy with the results. Not that I'm endorsing yet another exploitive reality show and I've only watched it because it's turned on by the female members of the family. Men aren't going to respond well, especially those who are married to plastic wives. They aren't just plastic on the outside either.

L.R.R.Hood is right. Republican trophy wives aren't having plastic surgery...because they're not old enough yet.

They may not be old enough for a face lift but they likely have garnered bigger boobs than their husbands,

Living in the OC is revealing and it's still the bastion of Christian Right Republicans. If you sit at one of the boardwalk restaurants at Lido Marina Village on the Balboa Peninsula and observe you'll see a parade of plastic face and bodies parading by. You'll also might see the Paul Crouch, the founder of Trinity Broadcasting, lunching with his latest boy toy.

I think its interesting how people can have completely 100% different experiences with their exposure to different aspects of culture... I guess all kinds of people have cosmetic surgery done, not just the trophy wives, or the porn-star-wannabe's.

I love that word... unseemly.

It was a shameless play on words. It's basically those who have the bucks and decide they want to look better. Is it really much different than a good haircut or cosmetic dental work? Actually, the women on the show (who would never be able to afford it) have that done too. Even laser eye surgery to get rid of their glasses. I think it's a personal decision and I'm not one to judge them. I kind of hope it works for them (especially the psychological therepy which I'm wondering is ongoing after the show). I think the reason they still look a little odd is that it really takes a year to recover and they pile a bit too much make-up on them which can give them that drag queen look. Now if my Mom (who lives with me) would stop insisting I record the show I might never watch it. Seriously.

Actually, I've resided in Hollywood so I've really seen it all (used to live off Laurel Canyon where the recent movie "Laurel Canyon" took place).
