Please explain the quotation part in a name

Mac met Alice "Polly" Louise Anderson of Sioux City, Iowa, when she took an accounting class taught by McKinsey at the University of Chicago.

Why is "Polly" put into the girl's name? Is it a nickname? Which part does it substitute, Alice?
