Why can't I ever remember the huge time difference, duh. It the computer's fault.
Pueo - one word: vegemite!
JD that's the most accurate description of an Aussie Christmas I've ever heard.
As kids we always spent Christmas at whichever relative happened to have a pool at the time.
I always thought it was the koala tea of murphy's. shows what I know. as a wee little bugger myself I used to lay in the back of the parental units' station wagon driving through los angeles and look up at all the eucalypti and imagine myself some koalas in 'em.
It's getting to the point in Oz that you have to do the same thing.
I love pool parties. Since it is warm there, that seems like a good way to celebrate Christmas, I suppose, though I think if I were in OZ, I'd be feeling more of that bittersweet moment of sadness that the solstice was going the other way. Your days are going to get shorter, while "up" here we're looking forward to the beginnings of longer days.
It is all screwed up and unfair to Ozzers and Ozzettes.
But, the pool party with champagne (and life guards)... that could be nice. I think palm tree trunks look lovely with lights wrapped around them. And what about a Norfolk Pine for a tree? Some eucalyptus brought in should give you a nice fragrance... and maybe some frangipani flowers???
Well, here we are at the solstice, Piffka! I guess from now on, technically, winter is on the way. But - our winters are pretty mild in comparison, and it'll still be warmish here until May, and we've never known otherwise.
I can't speak for Mr Stillwater, but I don't think that any of the other Aussies here have experienced this cold Christmas stuff. It's on my list of things to do before I pop off. Isn't it uncomfortable at the beach? The description of your clothes (from the what are you wearing thread) just doesn't go with Christmas. The description in JD's song is how it is, more or less, although there is less chance of the ute being rusty in these days of drought and regulation! (ute = pickup)
I've had several Norfolk Pines as Christmas trees, but the current one has turned up it's roots - and is sitting out there in it's pot - brown - perhaps a symbol of the drought this year. I'll amble off today and see if I can get a new one.
Here is the link to where I found the song.
Christmas Oz Style
I'm glad this thread was resurrected--i'd never read it before, and i greatly enjoyed Wilso's opening post. Now i'm gonna read the rest of the thread.

Didn't know dogs can read - cats can, of course, but dogs????
I need a hand - I vaguely remember an Oz 12 days of christmas that they flogged in the 1970s on 2SM or 2BL or some station in the Sydney AM band
If you remember any of the missing bits post them in. Google hasn't helped at all (stupid google)
On the first day of christmas my true love sent to me
A triple fronted brick veneer home
On the third day of christmas my true love sent to me
Three mulga wood ashtrays
On the fourth day of christmas my true love sent to me
Four Gold Coast teaspoons
On the fifth day of christmas my true love sent to me
Fiiiive sausage rolls
On the thirteenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me
The bill.
Sorry, hinge
Don't think I've heard it.
Got me stumped too, hinge.

I was a 2BL listener about then - and don't recall it (mind you - when you get to my age, and live like I do - you don't recall too much at all!)
May have been on 2SM?
I'm still an occasional 2BL listener - even though they don't call it that, these days!
