I set cruise control on the highway at any desired speed and when I approach another automobiles tail end, I apply the brake and the truck want to continue its set speed. no matter how hard I apply the brake the truck wants to stay at the set cruise controled speed until I turn it off on the column? What the heck could that be? It just started doing that

An accident waiting to happen. Stop using the cruise control until you have a mechanic look at it.

the brake switch on your pedal is bad. it is not signaling the cruise unit when you apply the brake.
